Nanyang Technological University (NTU) has been presented the Excellence in Training Development award at the Singapore International Maritime Awards (IMA) 2009. NTU is honoured in recognition for its outstanding contribution to Singapore’s maritime education landscape.
Since the Excellence in Training Development award was introduced at IMA in 2006, this is the first time that an institute of higher learning receives the award. The past recipients of this award were NYK Shipmanagement Pte Ltd and Neptune Shipmanagement Services (Pte) Ltd.
“We are very pleased and honoured to receive this prestigious award. It is a strong endorsement on NTU’s positive contributions to the development and growth of the nation's maritime industry. We will continue to develop NTU as the leading port of call for maritime education, training and research, and produce professionals to strengthen Singapore’s position as a global hub and leading International Maritime Centre,” says Prof Bertil Andersson, NTU Provost.
NTU secured the award for its commitment and excellence in training and development. The selection, conducted by a distinguished judging panel comprising both public and private sector representatives, is based on sponsorship of academic education and professional certification, training attachment programmes for students, and structured training and development initiatives.
Prof Bertil Andersson will receive the award from Transport Minister, Mr Raymond Lim, at the fifth Singapore IMA Gala Dinner on 21 April 2009.
Since year 2004, NTU has contributed significantly to the development of maritime tertiary education and research in Singapore by offering three internationally recognised degree programmes in Maritime Studies: Bachelor of Science in Maritime Studies, Bachelor of Science in Maritime Studies with Business Major and Master of Science in Maritime Studies. The programmes, which are the first and only of its kind in Singapore, are strongly supported by and conducted in collaboration with Maritime and Port Authority of Singapore (MPA), the maritime industry and world renowned overseas universities in Maritime Studies. The key features of the programmes include overseas exchange in Norway, visiting professor scheme and industrial attachment. Graduates are employed by various sectors in the maritime industry as management executives.
NTU recently also launched the Executive MBA in Shipping, Offshore and Finance. Jointly offered with BI Norwegian School of Management, this is a professional, global-oriented programme that aims to give participants an understanding of the key drivers, management challenges and different strategies in the shipping and offshore industry.
Besides the various study programmes, NTU also houses the NTU-MPA Maritime Research Centre, which since its inception in 2001, serves to coordinate maritime R&D effort among various local and international organisations. The NTU's Asian Business Case Centre, in collaboration with MPA, has since 2004, researched and published a series of management case studies on Singapore’s maritime and shipping industry.
