Companions Today, Collaborators Tomorrow: 110 International Science Youth Forum Participants Celebrate the Beginning of Lifelong Friendships

22-Jan-2009

1. Time flies when you are having fun! Five solid days of dialogues with Nobel Laureates, Sir Anthony James Leggett, Professor Douglas Dean Osheroff, and Professor Kurt WÜthrich, as well as cultural visits and sightseeing. The 1st International Science Youth Forum 2009 (ISYF) will end on a high note with Mr. Lim Chuan Poh, Chairman, Agency for Science, Technology and Research (A*STAR), delivering the Closing Address on 23 January (Friday) at Shangri-La Hotel.

2. Proudly sponsored by Temasek Foundation and co-sponsored by BASF, the inaugural ISYF is jointly organised by Hwa Chong Institution (HCI), and the Institute of Advanced Studies, Nanyang Technological University, with support from the Ministry of Education.

FORUM AGENDA

3. Said A*STAR Chairman, Mr Lim Chuan Poh—recently named by the prestigious Science journal as one of the research world's top 8 people to watch in 2009—“The International Science Youth Forum provides a useful platform for budding scientists to develop a sense of community in the creation of knowledge and innovation. This greatly enhances the global body of scientific knowledge and accelerates scientific breakthroughs.”

4. Added HCI CEO and Principal Ang Wee Hiong: “From strangers to friends, the delegates’ curiosity and thirst for knowledge have blurred the boundaries of their diverse cultures and nationalities. We are extremely happy to have been able to create a platform for our young scientists to broaden their perspectives and forge lasting bonds with their peers from Asia.”

Co-Organizer: Nanyang Technological University
3. Added Professor K K Phua, Director, Institute of Advanced Studies, Nanyang Technological University, “We are glad that the ISYF has been a successful platform where some of Asia’s brightest young minds have been further inspired in their quest for scientific knowledge and where they are also able to pursue out of the box thinking beyond what textbooks can offer. The ISYF has also provided another unique platform for the establishment of close ties among schools in Asia and this facilitates future collaborations among these institutions of learning. Such synergy can only propel Science to even greater heights.”

4. NTU is also pleased to have been able to leverage on its excellent international linkages in the academic world to bring together the 3 Nobel Laureates and other eminent scientists to the Forum. It looks forward to more such opportunities where it is able to bring together other renowned scientists to inspire and enrich the minds of our younger generation in their pursuit for scientific knowledge and excellence.

QUOTES FROM STUDENTS AND TEACHER DELEGATE

The inaugural ISYF 2009 has been an enriching and enjoyable experience for all of us. The overwhelming success of the ISYF would not have been possible without the active participation of our student delegates, and their passion for Science and knowledge.

Tay Jian Hua
Chairperson, Student Organising Committee Hwa Chong Institution, Singapore
The Nobel Laureates shared on how their research produced unexpected results only when they refused to quit. This courage to take the road less traveled and to persevere in one’s beliefs are both an inspiration and an encouragement to us as young science researchers.

Ewe Fang Jiunn
Chung Ling High School, Malaysia
This student-led Forum has impressed many of the educators present at the ISYF. Interacting first-hand with the Nobel Laureates has also proven to be an eye-opening experience for our students and we hope that they will go back to share the insights they have gleaned, with their peers so that more will be enthused about Science and research.

Ms Wang Peidong
Principal
The High School of Xi’an Jiaotong University, China
The ISYF brings together 82 top science students and 28 educators from 25 secondary schools and junior colleges in China, Hong Kong (SAR), Indonesia, Philippines, Taiwan, Thailand, Vietnam and Singapore.
