NTU launches new programme to groom business leaders
The employment outlook remains hopeful for this year’s graduating students at Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore), with a record number of 4,400 jobs available and 240 public and private sector employers participating in this year’s NTU Career Fair
Students with strong leadership potential will be invited to join a special programme from next month that will stretch them even further. Co-developed with industry-leading companies, the programme will expose high-achievers to the real-life challenges of business leadership.
Record number of jobs and participating companies
This year’s NTU Career Fair sees a record number of 4,400 jobs with 240 Singapore and multinational organisations participating. Some of the leading global companies taking part in the Fair include Accenture, Halliburton, ST Engineering and Tata Consultancy Services.
Sixty-four employers will be participating for the first time this year, such as General Electric, Huawei International, IBM Singapore, LEGO Singapore, and Procter & Gamble. Another new participant is Cognizant, a leading global provider of information technology, consulting, and business process services, that views NTU as a key talent source especially for science and technology graduates.
“Hiring the best talent is central to Cognizant’s market leadership and industry-leading growth,” said Mr Jayajyoti Sengupta, Asia Pacific Head of Cognizant. “Premier institutions such as NTU are key to our focus on building the talent for the future by turning STEM (science, technology, engineering and mathematics) graduates into IT professionals of global standards.
“Our NTU recruits have contributed a great deal towards enhancing our digital capabilities to help clients make the fundamental, technology-enabled changes across all aspects of their organisations — business, operations and systems — in order to compete and win in today’s technology- and data-intensive world.”
New programme to groom future business leaders
NTU is launching a new leadership programme for students who aspire to progress to top management and executive roles. Co-developed with industry, the programme’s inaugural partners are MediaCorp, NCH Singapore and Systems on Silicon Manufacturing Company.
Speaking at the launch, Professor Tan Ooi Kiang, NTU’s Associate Provost for Undergraduate Education said, “The launch of NTU PEAK today marks an important milestone for NTU, as it is our first signature leadership programme co-developed with our industry partners to groom high-achievers, while meeting the industry’s needs.”
Kicking off with 30 high-calibre students who will be invited to participate in the programme, NTU PEAK will sharpen their leadership capabilities by equipping them with content knowledge and practical experience of working in cross-disciplinary teams and leading others.
Senior leaders from these corporate partners will mentor the students over four weeks, as the students work on solutions to real-life business challenges, in areas such as marketing, business development and customer services strategies. The students will also get to meet and be inspired by CEOs and the senior management of these companies at various networking sessions.
Global careers await NTU graduates
More than 50 per cent of employers participating in the NTU Career Fair are multinational companies (MNCs). Working at an MNC is appealing to students who are drawn by the attractive remuneration packages and the possibility of overseas postings.
Brigitte Ong, a final-year student at NTU’s Nanyang Business School is one such student who went a step further to take a year-long internship at UBS. Her slightly longer path to a job paid off, as she will be placed in the Hong Kong office with an attractive remuneration package.
Relating her experience, Brigitte said, “UBS is a bank that I have always wanted to join as it stood out to me with its fantastic culture and people. As it was a year-long internship, I had to consider the pros and cons of holding my graduation back for a year but at this point I am thankful that I took it up.”
Her internship with the UBS sales team focused on streamlining the client-charging process. She also helped to create marketing and information materials targeted at clients, and assisted the sales team in account management.
“I took up their full time offer because I felt that the managers in the company guided me well and inspired me in my career development. More importantly, I enjoyed the culture and that is the most important factor while considering which firm to pick,” Brigitte added.
More than 15,000 students are expected to visit the fair over the three days, on February 9, 14 and 17, including 9,000 final-year undergraduate and postgraduate students who will graduate this July.
