​Michelin star power at new NTU alumni house ​

Nanyang Technological University, Singapore (NTU Singapore) alumni now have a place in the heart of Singapore to reunite with former classmates and professors, at the new Alumni House at Marina Square. 

The main attraction of the new 10,000 sq ft club is a contemporary restaurant and bar where visitors and guests will get to savour gastronomic delights prepared by chefs with strong culinary experience.

The renowned chefs, who will add their signature touches to the alumni house’s menu, have trained in Michelin-star restaurants and are part of Sodexo – one of the world's largest food service companies with experience in the education sector. The French gourmet powerhouse is also behind the iconic Michelin-starred restaurants, Le Pré Catalan and Le Jules Verne in Paris. 

NTU President, Professor Bertil Andersson, said, “The new alumni house provides a central location for our alumni to connect with their classmates and their alma mater. All our graduates are lifelong members of NTU and the university will help them to continue to grow professionally and to build networks with fellow alumni and their professors. With quality meals and relaxing spaces, the new alumni house will be a great place for NTU alumni to build and renew their friendships, spend quality time with their families, or meet like-minded people to pursue common interests.”

Chef Antoine Maillet will be the first among Sodexo’s global network of chefs in 80 countries, who will periodically share their authentic native cuisine and culture at the Mortar Restaurant & Bar at the new NTU Alumni House. 

Chef Maillet had trained under Chef Gerald Passedat, a triple Michelin-star-holder at Le Petit Nice, in Marseille, France. His extensive experience spans across Europe, South America and Southeast Asia.

As the guest chef, Chef Maillet, together with the Mortar Restaurant & Bar team, will be dishing up a delicious and delightful experience for diners at the opening, including his signature dish Bouillabaisse – a fish stew that originates from Marseille, France – the birthplace of Sodexo.  

Leading Mortar is F&B Director Justin Foo, who has trained under Chef Andre Chiang at Restaurant Par Andre and Le Saint Julien. With thematic events, live music and a relaxing ambience, Justin and his team curate a pleasant visit for all guests at Mortar.

Specially-designed NTU cocktail and new mobile app

To complement the restaurant’s cosmopolitan cuisine, the adjacent bar features artisanal cocktails conceptualised by expert mixologists. 

A new rum-based cocktail has been created to commemorate the opening of the new alumni house that celebrates the diversity amongst the NTU community. 

A new mobile app for alumni has also been launched and alumni will be able to access their alumni card electronically in order to access the facilities. More features will be added in future. 

“The alumni house is an important place that fosters relationships by keeping people connected to their alma mater. To enhance this connection, we’re proud to offer our own app to our alumni,” said Prof Lee Sing Kong, NTU’s Vice-President for Alumni and Advancement. 

“The beauty of this app is we can alert alumni not only to access the alumni house facilities, but also to enjoy discounts and privileges from the participating retail merchants. 

“With the introduction of this mobile app, NTU has gone beyond the conventional way of engaging the alumni, as we move into the digital domain,” Prof Lee added.

All NTU alumni are entitled to various privileges including a free Alumni Card that comes with benefits from more than 60 participating merchants spanning shopping, dining, leisure, sport and entertainment, and hotels and resorts in Singapore and abroad. 

For a small fee, they can also use the university’s sports and library facilities, and apply for professional and personal development courses or graduate programmes offered by NTU. Many of the short courses are offered to alumni at discounted rates. Alumni are also entitled to a free lifelong email account for ease of communicating with their varsity mates.

More spaces for alumni

In addition to the Alumni House at Marina Square, two more alumni houses at one-north and on NTU’s main campus are also in the works. 

Open to all NTU alumni, faculty, and staff, there are no membership fees to be paid, and identification is made through their NTU alumni or employee card. 

NTU’s alumni family currently numbers more than 211,000 across 150 countries. There are 80 NTU Alumni Associations worldwide, with 35 based in Singapore and 45 overseas.
